Title

The Nature of the Beast: Portrayals of Animals in Japanese Paintings and Prints

Description

Paintings of animals and birds have enjoyed enormous popularity in the history of Japanese art. This exhibit will examine the different ways that Japanese artists of the Edo period (1600-1868) rendered animals and birds in paintings, prints, and other art works. Some favored the idealization of animals according to traditional Chinese artistic standards; others chose realistic depictions, while others still attempted to depict the essence of the bird or beast in playful, abstracted images. These different paintings styles were often linked with different social groups and often served very different purposes.
